Not All Solar Panels Are Created Equal: Why Sustainability Now Matters as Much as Efficiency

As the global shift toward renewable energy accelerates, solar power has become a cornerstone of the transition. But while demand for photovoltaic (PV) systems continues to surge, a crucial truth is often overlooked: not all solar panels are the same.

Behind the promise of clean energy lies a complex supply chain, one that can vary significantly in terms of environmental impact, ethical standards, and long-term performance.

Hidden Differences in Solar Panel Production

At first glance, most solar panels appear similar. However, key differences exist beneath the surface:

  • Use of toxic substances: Some panels rely on materials and manufacturing processes that involve hazardous chemicals, raising environmental and disposal concerns.
  • Risk of forced labour: Parts of the global solar supply chain have faced scrutiny over labour practices, making transparency increasingly important.
  • Lifespan and durability: Not all panels are built to last the same number of years, impacting both sustainability and return on investment.
  • Carbon footprint: The emissions generated during manufacturing can differ widely depending on production methods and energy sources.

These factors mean that choosing solar panels is no longer just a technical or financial decision—it’s an ethical and environmental one as well.

A New Standard for Responsible Solar Procurement

To address these challenges, the platform duurzamezonnepanelen.org was developed. This initiative is a collaboration between key Dutch stakeholders, including the Ministry of Economic Affairs, the Netherlands Enterprise Agency, Metaalunie, and FME, alongside regional partners such as the Amsterdam Metropolitan Area and the Province of South Holland.

The platform provides buyers, businesses, and public institutions with clear insights into the sustainability credentials of solar panels. Its goal is simple: empower decision-makers to choose products that align with responsible sourcing, lower environmental impact, and long-term value.

Industry Response: Sustainability Meets Performance

Manufacturers are beginning to respond to these higher standards. Companies like SOLARWATT are demonstrating that strong performance does not have to come at the expense of sustainability. By meeting the highest achievable criteria outlined by the platform, they highlight a growing trend: quality, transparency, and responsible production can go hand in hand.

Policy Momentum at the Local Level

This shift is not limited to industry alone. Municipal governments are also stepping in to drive change.

Cities such as Municipality of Amsterdam and Municipality of Rotterdam have introduced new measures to encourage the adoption of sustainable solar panels. These include stricter subsidy conditions and increased focus on responsible procurement practices.

Such policies signal a broader evolution in climate strategy, one that goes beyond simply increasing renewable capacity and instead emphasises the quality and integrity of the energy transition itself.

A Turning Point for the Solar Sector

For organisations planning new PV installations, this marks a critical moment. Sustainability can no longer be treated as an afterthought. Instead, it must be structurally embedded into procurement processes from the outset.

The message is clear: the future of solar energy isn’t just about generating clean power - it’s about ensuring that every step of the journey, from production to installation, meets the highest standards of environmental and social responsibility.
