The first megawatt storage system at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) with SOLARWATT battery modules: KIT has taken delivery of 608 MyReserve batteries for its new stationary giant energy storage project, providing a total capacity of around 1.5 MWh. The project is a close-to-production prototype of a large lithium-ion battery system with particularly low operating and maintenance costs, which will shortly go into operation at KIT.

“Our contribution to KIT’s giant energy storage project shows that our batteries are able to store power up to the megawatt class,” says Dr. Olaf Wollersheim, Managing Director of SOLARWATT INNOVATION. “Since our two modular battery elements can be individually scaled, they are the ideal solution for all possible applications.”

The MyReserve battery can be configured to fit almost any situation – as a  comparatively small system at home or on an industrial scale, as a battery to provide individual sites with 100% renewable energy or, in the future, as a district storage unit in a Smart City. “Our modular battery concept ideally suits our future-oriented product strategy. It enables us to respond precisely to various customer requirements. We have also built our production lines so we can react quickly and with agility to new market requirements,” says Wollersheim, who is responsible for continuing development of the MyReserve battery at SOLARWATT.

The Energy Lab 2.0 at KIT is investigating the interaction of components of future energy systems. New approaches to stabilise energy networks are tested under realistic conditions. A plant network links electrical, thermal and chemical energy flows as well as new information and communication technologies. As the research university of the Helmholtz Association, KIT acquires and imparts knowledge for a better society and environment. The aim is to make significant contributions to global challenges in the fields of energy, mobility and information.
